Ocean’s Four: My Top 3 Takeaways (2 of 3)

And today I’m going to tell you about the SECOND big takeaway I had from this past weekend’s “Ocean’s Four” ELITE Mastermind.

That takes foresight – aka you gotta have the time, space and ability…

To PREDICT.

And that’s your #1 job as CEO.

YOU are guiding the ship.

You look at the potential obstacles and opportunities facing your business…

And you chart a successful course through these stormy waters.

As Captain?

Your job is hard enough.

It applies whether you’re a one-person solopreneur, just getting your business off the ground…

OR if you have an existing organization.

Here’s how it works:

Why is this such a big deal?

It’s because growing a team, the RIGHT way, is the #1 way to scale your business from wherever you are right now…

…To 6, 7, 8 figures and beyond.

And this framework gives you a very helpful, “Big Picture” view on how to scale – by breaking your business down into two main functions:

High Level Thinking (represented by the top half of the hourglass)…

And DOING (the bottom half of the hourglass).

In the middle, between these two functions, you’ll see I drew a box – which is your project management software.

(Like Teamwork PM, Podio, Basecamp, etc…)

And that’s ok, when you’re just starting out.

But for the most part, when you’re ready to REALLY grow your business?

You need to free yourself up to do the “thinking” as much as possible…

…By building a TEAM to help you execute.

And this is where Mike’s strategy gets into the nitty-gritty of how to do this, the RIGHT way…

Because instead of hiring for “positions”…

(As in, hiring a full-time designer / coder / writer / etc.)

And becoming dependent on ONE person to fill each position and function?

Mike laid out how to start building your “bench”…

…Your entire TEAM of players…

Right from the start.

Here’s how that looks:

Instead of just having one designer that’s full-time…

You might start by having one designer that you commit to 5 hours per week, no matter what.

And then, as you have more design work, you might ramp that up to a 10 hour week commitment.

BUT…

Instead of just using the same designer for 10 hours/week…

Because you’re trying to build your team for the long term…

You get a SECOND designer at 5 hours per week.

This way, you’ve got TWO solid team-members that you’re training up.

So that if it doesn’t end up working out with one of them?

(They get sick, or quit, or whatever…)

You’ve already got your bench.

And they’re ready to step in immediately.

So your business doesn’t skip a beat.

Pretty cool, right?

This was an eye-opener for me on how to build a systematized business…

And I’m implementing it myself as we speak.

But this was just ONE of the countless nuggets of wisdom from the weekend…

My Biggest Takeaway from “Titans of Direct Response”…

So I just got back from Titans of Direct response the other day.

And let me tell you…

Man, this thing was EPIC.

My good friend Brian Kurtz put on an event that people are going to be talking about for the next 20 years.

Let me give you some of the highlights real quick…

Probably the biggest highlight was the private dinner that I hosted for 31 of my clients and close business associates.

In attendance were folks like…

A number of my private clients…

And the one and only Jay Abraham even was there as well.

Job #1: Funnel Tech Wizard

This is a full-time job. Competitive salary. This is NOT a short-term gig. On the contrary, I am looking someone who will be with me for the next 5+ years. So if you’re just looking for something as a “stop gap”, this is NOT for you. You’ll be working VERY closely with me and my clients (who are some of the most successful businesses online), so for the right person – this is a FANTASTIC opportunity.

In this role, you’ll be my “Tech Guy” both for my OWN sites as well as client “Survey Funnel” implementations. This involves a mix of “webmaster” type work, working with (and connecting) 3rd party applications (like Aweber, Infusionsoft, etc.), creating funnel sales and checkout pages, and limited work with PHP, Javascript (for building things like “exit pops” etc.) You will NOT be building webapps for sale to the public.

You’ll be working on my own websites – as well as client funnel implementations. The funnels I build tend to be similar – but because clients tend to use different tools (CMS, shopping cart, ESP, etc.) you’ll need to be comfortable working with different technologies.

More specifically, here’s the type of work you’ll be doing:

Funnel Tech Setup:
The funnels I build often involve “connecting” and setting up multiple applications.  This includes building and setting up forms, creating shopping cart pages, setting up AR sequences in ESP providers, and connecting all the pieces to that the tech “works”.  Tools include:

  • Proprietary tools: SurveyFunnel.io / DeadlineFunnel.io
  • Email Providers: Aweber, Infusionsoft, Ontraport, Maropost, SendReach etc.
  • ShoppingCarts: Clickbank, 1ShoppingCart, etc.
  • Tracking: Google Analytics, Kissmetrics

HTML / CSS: 
The funnels I build require building landing pages, sales pages, checkout pages, upsell pages, etc. You’ll be working with the designer to convert design into functioning funnel pages, which involve converting .PSD into HTML + CSS.  Attention to detail is important here.  You should be anal about pages being off by a pixel. To give you an idea on the type of pages:

Javascript / PHP: 
You’ll need to be able to use PHP & Javascript to do things like this:

  • Popups like this.
  • Forms with fancy conditional logic (and building the PHP thank you page):
  • Forms like this.
  • Thank You Pages like this.

Site / Server Speed Improvement:
Site and server speed has a significant impact on conversion.  You’ll need to be able to troubleshoot and increase page load speed by modifying both on page elements and at least advise on server settings to optimize load times:

  • Sites like Pingdom are on your “most visited” list and you live for that shit.
  • Sites like Securi and Cloudflare is shit you know how to setup in your sleep.

Funnel Tracking & Split-testing:
You’ll be responsible for setting up (and troubleshooting) conversion tracking using tools like:

  • Google Analytics, Kissmetrics, HasOffers, FB conversion tracking, Adwords conversion tracking, Clickbank VTIDs, etc.

You’ll be responsible for setting up split-tests different page elements using tools like:

  • Custom PHP split-testing code (that you create)
  • Convert.com / VWO (Visual Website Optimizer) etc.

General Tech Troubleshooting:

  • Responsible for solving all tech issues (across client implementations, Ryan businesses)
  • You love the idea of being the ultimate tech troubleshooter to solve and fix all tech issues

Job #2: Super Detailed Webinar & Marketing Assistant

You need to be a super-organized-detailed-planner type who ALSO has the technical skills to set things up in WordPress, Leadpages, GoToWebinar, etc. In this role, you’ll be doing four things:

1) Running Webinars: You’ll be in charge of setting up, organizing, and scheduling ALL my webinars (both promotional and training).  This involves a number of detailed steps with GoToWebinar, LeadPages, 1ShoppingCart, Aweber, etc. – which cannot be fucked up (more on that below).

2) Promotional Calendar: You’ll be managing the promotional calendar for the training side of my business (Survey Funnel Formula, etc.).  This involves planning 3-6 months what products we’ll be promoting, who will be promoting ours, and what the editorial content (emails from Ryan) will cover.

3) Facebook Group: You’ll be be managing my Next Level Mastermind Facebook Group.  This will involve answering questions, stimulating discussion, translating mastermind calls and group expert calls into notes, uploading those notes to the group, etc.

4.) Documenting Procedures: Documenting and following the step-by-step procedures on all of the above.  I live by checklists and procedures.  You’ll be responsible for documenting (in detail) all the above processes so that in the event another team member needs to perform, everything is spelled out in detail.

Basically, I need someone who will take care of ALL the details (flawlessly) on all the above – so that my role is to simply show up for each webinar, deliver the training, and that’s it.  I can’t be chasing you to get things done and stay on top of everything.  That will get you fired. On the contrary – I need YOU to stay on top of me.  Just tell me where to be and when. I also need someone is completely anal about documenting and following procedures.  Someone who loves that shit.

Lastly – you need to be flexible.  The above tasks are things I need help with immediately.  But the role may evolve over time.

I need to clarify something…

In case you missed it, here are his initial numbers again:

The thing I need to clarify is this:

On that LAST section on the right – PHASE III…

It says “Projections”…

And a few people asked me about that – wondering if I just “made those numbers up”…

Well…

The label on that section should more accurately say “Month to Date” – because those are our ACTUAL month-to-date revenue numbers from 1ShoppingCart…

ACTUAL month-to-date advertising expense numbers from Yahoo/Bing…

And our ACTUAL # of Aweber subscribers…

(The reason it says “Projections” is because we don’t have a full month data – and worst-case, we’re projecting what we’ve actually achieved so far…)

Make ‘em sense?

Subject: SFF Student Case Study: Pet Market (After Starting from Scratch…)

I thought you’d like to see this:

1st-6-months-pet

So what you see there…

Is the first 6 months of one of my students – we’ll call him Roger (not his real name) – breaking into a BRAND NEW market using my Survey Funnel Formula process…

The niche is a Pet Market (specifics are withheld to protect my student’s – and my – financial interests).

Now I want to draw your attention to something important:

The THREE phases you see in that image:

PHASE I – This is the “Deep Dive” Survey Phase. Where we’re gathering data – and spending a little money on advertising to drive traffic our Deep Dive survey.

(Remember: The point of this phase is understanding the market’s hot buttons, and figuring out what segments exist.)

PHASE II – This is “Optimization” Phase. Here we’ve launched the Survey Funnel style funnel, we’re driving traffic to it, but we’re not yet profitable.

We’re STILL LOSING MONEY here.

In this case, the only revenue we were generating was off of ONE product, through SVS (Same Visit Sale) ONLY. No email followup. No “Profit Maximization” upsell sequence. And under optimized headline and landing page design.

PHASE III – This is the “Tipping Point” Phase. Here you see a RADICAL shift in the economics, and we are IN THE BLACK.

In fact, here we’re making better than 2:1 on our advertising.

We have our funnel down.

This thing is ROCKIN’.

And by the way, in case you’re wondering about the relatively SMALL numbers?

Well, right now…

We’re ONLY advertising on Yahoo/Bing.

Which represents < 20% of the market – when we factor in Google Adwords.

(It’s even LESS than that when we take into account Facebook.)

We used Yahoo/Bing to optimize the funnel, work out all the kinks, and now we’re about to SCALE by adding Google Adwords as our next traffic source.

And when we do that and grab the REMAINING 80% of traffic through Adwords (on the same KWs we’ve proven convert) the numbers will look more like $15,000/mo in revenue…

And typically, when I expand to Google Adwords traffic from Bing…

My margins actually improve. So I wouldn’t be surprised if this translates to an $8500/mo in PROFIT business, which would put things around $100K annualized.

Not too shabby for a relatively small, obscure Pet Niche.

So what’s this got to do with YOU?

A few things:

First, most people who go through the Survey Funnel Formula process for the first time…

Lose faith or at least QUESTION the process as they’re going through PHASE II – the “Optimization Phase” where you’re not QUITE profitable yet.

In fact, one of the BIGGEST MISTAKES I see is when people get to this point – and they GIVE UP.

(Little do they know how CLOSE they are to that “Tipping Point” that’s so typical when building one of these things from scratch…)

This is that whole “Three feet from gold” thing Napoleon Hill talks about in Think and Grow Rich.

This is what that looks like in real life.

So when you get to that point?

Don’t stop.

You’re damn close.

Keep going.

That’s the first thing.

The second thing is this:

To go from “Losing Money” to “Wildly Profitable” – you DO gotta do a few things.

It ain’t just happening with magic and “intention”.

(Sorry to burst yer bubble :-) )

In this case, the specific “things” that got us to the “Tipping Point” were as follows:

1. Segmenting people into our 3 main segments using the “Bucket Survey” I teach in SFF…

2. Adding a 1-click upsell “Profit Maximization” sequence like I teach in SFF with just ONE product…

3. Adding a prospect “Do You Hate Me” email sequence like I teach in SFF – culminating in a 60% off SALE of our front-end product…

4. Adding a customer email sequence that sells customers “more stuff” after the initial purchase (in this case – 2 affiliate products, and 1 additional product we created.)

And that’s it.

Roger gets the credit with for sticking to the plan – and ruthlessly implementing. He followed the system. Trust my guidance. And he’s rockin’ and rollin’.

So here’s why I bring up this whole Bruce Lee thing…

First…

Recently, I’ve been a little “delinquent” about sending out my daily email tip and have sort of “disappeared” (Bruce Lee style) for a few weeks…

The reason?

Well, between the 17 markets I’m in right now doing my Survey Funnel thing…

Running my 3 info-product businesses…

And just wrapping up the most recent Ocean’s Four ELITE Mastermind in Miami…

I’ve been putting in 12-14 hour days…

And on top of it all…

I’m the middle of moving (I’ll send you pics of the new place in a few weeks…)

And my main assistant JUST had a baby (and is on maternity leave…)

AND my OWN wife is 6 months pregnant right now…

So….

As a result?

I’ve sorta disappeared off the email radar for a few weeks now…

Remy Danton: House of Cards Marketing Lesson #3

So, we’ve covered Claire Underwood…

And her husband’s arch enemy…

Raymond Tusk.

So today?

Why don’t we switch gears…

And talk about the guy who ping-pongs between both sides…

And who has ZERO allegiance with EITHER team:

Remy Danton.

Political mercenary.

Survivor (maybe).

Always open to a better offer.

Which brings us to our BIG marketing lesson for the day:

You see, Remy’s got it figured out.

He knows what he wants.

His allegiance lies with whoever’s paying top dollar.

And he’s willing to “pivot” or change teams…

Whenever it makes sense.

So, the marketing lesson is THIS:

To be successful, it’s absolutely critical to have laser focus…

Gotta know what you want.

Need to have that bulls-eye to aim for…

Whether that’s knowing who your ideal customer is…

The ONE action you want that potential customer to take…

(Or both)

But here’s the catch:

If you’ve got that laser focus…

And you’ve ALSO got the blinders on to other potentially BETTER opportunities…

Then you’re making a mistake (and leaving serious money on the table).

Examples:

I had a laser-focused goal today to write this damn email.

Had a 90 minute block between calls today to get it done – among a few other things.

But….

This morning, I got a surprise text message from my wife inviting me to lunch at my favorite Mexican restaurant in town.

(aka – your classic “better opportunity”)

Lunch won.

Which is why you’re getting this tonight.

Okay.

Here’s a better example.

A marketing one.

So, back in 2012 when I was *teaching* internet marketing stuff…

I came out with a VSL course with Jon Benson.

I think we sold it for $300 or $400 bucks.

Fine.

Anyway, about 6 months after we’d put that course on the market…

I get a call from a friend of mine, Drew Kossoff.

(Drew is a big media buyer who lives out in LA)

Drew tells me he’s got a client who’s interested in talking to me about his VSL…

And wanted to know if I’d be open to hopping on the phone for 30 minutes with the client.

Normally?

I don’t do that sort of thing.

And this particular client of his?

Hadn’t even bought my VSL course (not a good sign)…

But I value my relationship with Drew – and wanted to do him a solid.

So I agreed.

Did the call.

And the result?

The client booked me to do 3 VSLs over 12 months – worth WELL over $100K in business to me (and counting)…

And we’ve got our next project coming ‘round the corner next month…

Wasn’t interested in a $300 course…

Never talked to me before that call….

Never spent a dollar with me before then either.

He knew me by reputation. And he wanted the done-for-you option. Boom.

So the “big marketing lesson” is this:

Yes. Have that laser focus.

But keep your eyes (and mind) open for that “better deal”…

So many people slave away on their hands and knees chasing after pennies on the floor…

When they don’t realize there’s a hundred dollar bill sitting on the table in front of them.

Remy knows what he wants.

Has that laser-focus.

But he’s got his eye on ALL the tables.

So should you….
